Everett Niewoehner, or Ev, for short, was born in 1939 in rural Iowa and in 1949 moved to Colorado with his family. He graduated from Fort Collins High School in 1957 and from Colorado State University in 1964. In 1965 he earned an M.A. degree in history from the University of Northern Colorado. He studied art, education and political science at the University of Utah from 1965 to 1967. In 1967, Niewoehner moved to Los Angeles where he taught art and American history until 1971. During this time, he spent the summer of 1968 studying art at the University of Guadalajara in Mexico and the the following summer studying history at Pepperdine University. After several more years of teaching, Niewoehner retired, which has enabled him to get back to his first love, oil painting, an activity at which he is working full time
